The Time Machine belongs to a genre of literature that began to emerge at the height of the Industrial Revolution: Science Fiction.

The human imagination was enthralled,

enchanted and even frightened with the possibilities that science and technology offered humankind.

Authors such as H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and Mary Shelly offered tales of space alien invasion, journeys to lost prehistoric worlds, resurrections from the dead, and time travel.

The themes of exploration, scientific discovery and the consequences of man manipulating the natural world captured the imagination of the public. Many of these themes and ideas are still influential in Science Fiction today.
